Lawyers with ADHD face up to three times the risk of burnout or involuntary exit compared with neurotypical peers.
Research shows employees with ADHD report significantly higher burnout scores (effect size ≈ 1.13) and are around three times more likely to quit a job impulsively.
They burn out from masking, overworking, and constantly trying to meet unrealistic expectations in rigid systems that don’t fit how their brains work.
Many experience Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) — driving them to over-perform, avoid speaking up, and struggle to say “no” for fear of being seen as not coping.

I began my career in private practice — billing hours, chasing perfection, and masking how differently my brain worked. I was a high-performing lawyer, but trying to fit the mold left me exhausted.
When I moved in-house to FTSE 100 companies like Severn Trent and Rolls-Royce, everything changed.
I didn’t know I had ADHD back then — I only found out this year — but looking back, it explains everything.
My ability to manage complex relationships, design frameworks to manage workload and expectations, deliver value beyond the legal brief, and see the bigger commercial picture — all came from how my brain works. My ADHD was never a flaw. It was my edge.
It allowed me to spot strategic opportunities, simplify complexity, and build trust through authentic communication. Since then, I’ve developed and delivered growth and people strategies for General Counsel and legal leaders, helping them define their value, lead with confidence, and build influence across the business.
